RESEARCH - functions of music videos


What is a function of a music video?


The function of a music video is to entertain the audience. It also acts as a way to promote and advertise the artists themselves in order to gain a wider audience, gain publicity and make more money.
The artists make music to put on an album and the label select a single to make a video for assuming that it will be most popular.

Music videos can often go viral (a popular video that is most watched and talked about via social networks). This helps the artists gain popularity and publicity making them make more money.
A perfect example of a music that went viral is gangam style by PSY:


Once a video goes viral, people often make parody videos to mock the song. Even though it may seem as if the artist or the label will be angered by this, they are actually in fact happy because parody videos acts as a symbol to show how much of a success the song and video was.
