RESEARCH - Analysis of costume, setting and props in music videos

LOCATIONS/SETTING: This video uses approximately 7 different locations including an estate(external & internal), a skate park, and a busy London road. This in itself keeps the viewer interested as there is a constant change in the video. The estate/London street is a conventional setting for a grime video therefore it follows the stereotype. Also it is a reflection of the artist's background. The skate park acts as a symbol of poor wealth as there is a young boy practicing his dance when really he should be in a more suitable environment such as a dance studio.

COSTUME: The main artists change twice. At first they are wearing a baseball jacket in Wretch 32's label to promote himself as an artist. The next outfits worn are casual and typical of a young working class male. The extras in the video are all dressed differently making them unique which is what the whole song is about. This breaks the conventional tradition. One female in particular is dressed in a contradictory outfit as she is wearing minimal/revealing clothes under a big puffy jacket. This represents her as being different and 'unorthodox'.

PROPS: There are a variety of props used throughout the video. One that is seen often is a large speaker inside a trolley. This could be a representation of working class artists wanting to succeed.Another is bikes. It is very typical of young males to be riding bicycles and shows the contrast between big hip hop videos where expensive cars are used and smaller scale grime videos where such vehicles may not be used.
