Function of a Music Video

What is a function of a music video?

A music video is a videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics. It is a marketing tool that is used as a visual aid to help sell the artist and everything to do with the artist to a mass audience.

There are many purposes to a to a music video however the main purpose of a music video is to promote the single, the artist and the album the single is in. Music videos often have to do a few things to promote which are:

1.     Make the audience remember the song just from the video
2.     Give the viewer a better understanding of the song so they can engage in it more
3.     To entertain the viewer, make them keep watching. Dancing and singing could do this.

A viral video is a video that is shared on the Internet and across social media websites that is very popular and it gets everyone talking about it. A good example of this is “Gangnam Style”. Gangnam Style has had over 1.7million views on YouTube and this is mainly down to it being distributed through social media sites and everyone seeing it. Because of the music video and its entertainment, which include the unique dance moves this has promoted the song and from seeing the video the audience can remember the song.

All music videos try and achieve the 3 things listed above to promote their single and below is just one example of many.

This is a good example of a music video as it is entertaining because of the characters and singing and also gives a viewer a better understanding of the song as the video shows them on their journey and what they are up to.
