Overview 2

Over the course I have really enjoyed the filming process. I enjoyed planning it because it involved watching several music videos and understanding the effect some of them have. Choosing the song and creating an Artist was also enjoyable because it allowed me to be creative. The filming process was also fun because not only was I involved in it but I also helped film some shots. I enjoyed working with my group because we all got on well, worked hard and had fun at the same time. Editing the footage was really enjoyable because I got to watch over all the clips with my group and we had fun whilst doing so. We were also able to be creative and put together a music video whilst adding transitions and effects during the process. However towards the end it did become stressful because we was coming closer and closer to the deadline.

BLOOPERS

Heres a mini blooper video from some of our footage!

TICKING OUR GROUP OFF!

Once we finished editing and saving our film, we had to tick off our group to show that we have finished doing so.

SAVING OUR FINAL OUTCOME!!

After finishing off editing our video, We had to save our final outcome using a certain name for the file and highlighting it in yellow to show that it is our final outcome.

Overview

From AS I was able to pick up on key skills which helped me to receive a high grade for my coursework. I felt the skills I learnt played a huge part in my knowledge of editing and filming throughout the course. Some of the skills that I learnt include:

  • The different variety of shots and the effect they have.
  • How to edit using final cut pro.
  • How to add filters and other transitions.
  • How to fade shots in and out.
  • How to set up equipment such as the tripod.

Even though I had picked on some key skills, I felt that in AS I made several mistakes that I need to improve on. One of these key factors was focusing the camera. We had several shots that were out of focus and therefore we couldn't use in our final outcome even though the shots were very good.

In A2 this is one of the things I worked on and I felt it went well because all of my shots were in focus. This gave as a more variety of shots to use, where as in AS we had a minimal range of shots to use.
I also felt in A2 I was able to expand my knowledge on and improve on some of the skills I had already learnt. I also felt I learnt new skills which helped made my video interesting to watch.
Some of these skills include:

  • How to lay base tracks on the timeline.
  • How to mark the base tracks and the song.
  • How to make the song and the footage in sync.
  • How to hide certain layers which made it easier to see which shot works better.
  • How to add more effects to our footage. For example how to desaturate some shots.
  • I learnt how to change the speed of some shots.
  • How to focus shots better.
  • How to use the pleasantville effect
  • How to fade shots on top of one and another by changing the opacity levels.

Air dropping technique, how it benefits us

We learnt how to airdrop, this technique is good because it enables us to do two different things at once such as edit and blog. We used airdrop to screen shot are progress on editing and then send it to the mac where we could blog it as we are doing now with this blog.  Below is a example of a shot we tried effecting and were able to do after various attempts. Also we have included a short video of how the airdrop technique works.

In the editing room

Just a quick minute video of what we're doing today. As the deadline for the music video is tomorrow we have decided to go into the editing room mainly because the 3 screens as this will make our editing process more efficient.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT - New editing skills I have learnt

Over the course of the past few weeks I have learnt many new things in relation to editing skills. Firstly, I became familiar with how to edit a music video overall using basetracks and markers. I wasn't able to do this last year and would have had no clue where to start. Now i know that you have to lay all the basetracks on the timeline - muting the soung as I go along. This makes editing much easier as everything is already there and just needs to be cut/moved whatever the case may be. I am aware that you have to mark a significent lyric in the sound then mark the acting of that lyric in the imagery. You must then line up the markers in order to get the sound matching the visual. Another skill I learnt was how to overlay more than one shot using opacity levels. This is done by clicking the toggle button at the bottom then altering the line that goes through the clips on the timeline

filming overview - day 5

DAY 5:
Due to a lack of night shots, we had to film a few shots in the screen room in the dark so that it can suit or structure of the video starting off during the day and ending in the night. We was experimenting with different shots from different angles to see which shot works most effectively in order for the artist to gain an emotional link with the audience.

filming overview - day 4

DAY 4:
On the fourth day we went to the park to film another base track. We got a variety of shots tracking the artist and we got a wide range of shots. We tracked the artist walking and also filmed him sitting on a bench. We felt this location was effective to suit his working class, urban character.

filming overview - day 3

DAY 3:
For the third day we went to London bridge to film some more location shots. We got shots of traffic, the river, and some other visuals. I felt this went well because we managed to film a variety of shots which look effective visually.

We went to clink street under the bridge so that we can film another base track. We got shots from different angles of the artist sitting under the bridge. This went well because we managed to successfully film another base track which helps to engage with the audience emotionally.

filming overview - day 2

DAY 2:
For our second day of filming we went to south bank so we can film our second base track as well as different location shots for visual effect. I felt this day went well as we managed to film a variety of shots in the space of a day. We filmed night shots as well as morning shots so we can get a range of of time in our video and so that we can follow a morning to night structure.

EDITING - Extra filming

We were really pleased with the outcome of this last minute decision. The light shining on our artist gave the illusion that he had tears in his eyes which really added to the emotional mood. We will now get back to editing to see what we can do with these great shots

EDITING - Change of plan

This is the studio we have decided to use for filming another basetrack. As mentioned before, this room has professional lighting which will create the perfect mood for 'I need'

EDITING - 2nd Rought cut feedback - last minute improvements

We got our teacher Dan to watch our updated rough cut. He gave us his honest opinion and some great advice on how to improve.

One comment that we really took on board was that there wasn't enough footage of the artist himself after the halfway mark. We watched our rough cut again and completely agreed with this criticism. With only a few days left until the deadline we had to think on our feet and decided that our best bet was to use the studio with a black back-drop and professional lighting. We could film our artist singing there and slot some footage in towards the end of the song where his absence is too noticeable for a new artists' video.
Also, we will re-evaluate having black and white shots

EDITING - 2nd Rough Cut

This is our second rough cut which demonstrates the changes we made after the feedback we got from our target audience and teacher. We are still open to negative criticism more change in order to further improve

Filming overview - day 1

DAY 1:
For the first day of filming we went to the bus stop to film our first base track. We filmed a variety of shots, exploring from different angles. I felt the day went well and we managed to get a wide range of clips in a short period of time.

EDITING - Rough cut target audience feedback

We asked a few members of our target audience to give feedback on our rough cut. We feel this will be very helpful and will make improvement much easier

Some extra comments from our teacher

Positives
-Specific shots create a really suited atmosphere to the song(e.g: bird flying across Thames)

-Right amount of lyrical peformance

-Strong scenery/wide shots - give viewer a real sense of London

Improvements
-Use slow motion instead of fast motion to match track pace

-Start with scenery shot instead of artist looking away from camera(swap first two shots around)

-Don't cut very often during verses - all about lyrical peformance
